MY INTERNSHIP JOURNEY AT SMK RUS WITH ANIMATION AND PROGRAMMING STUDENTS

 As part of my SEA Teacher Journey in Indonesia, I had the privilege of completing my teaching internship at SMK Raden Umar Said (SMK RUS) a school recognized for its excellence in multimedia, animation, and programming. From the very first day, I felt the energy of a campus that encouraged creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Exploring the SMK RUS Campus The SMK RUS campus was truly inspiring. It had well-equipped computer labs, multimedia rooms, and creative studios designed for animation and programming students. The facilities were modern and industry-relevant, allowing students to experience real-world learning. Walking through the halls, I often saw students busy with digital projects designing characters, creating animated clips, or coding programs. There were also open areas where students gathered to discuss their ideas, making the school feel more like a creative hub than a traditional institution.

Teaching Focus and Learning Styles During my internship, my primary role was teaching the advanced use of Microsoft Office applications to Animation and Programming students. While they were skilled in creative software, learning advanced Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint was essential for project documentation, data analysis, and professional presentations. I used a demonstration-based and hands-on teaching style: • In Word, I introduced them to advanced formatting, templates, and styles for creating polished reports. • In Excel, we focused on formulas, functions, and data visualization tools like charts and pivot tables. • In PowerPoint, we explored creative slide designs, transitions, and effective storytelling techniques for presentations. After demonstrations, I provided practical exercises so they could apply what they learned immediately, encouraging independent practice and collaboration. Classroom Management Strategies Managing a classroom of creative, tech-savvy students required a structured yet flexible approach. To keep lessons engaging and organized, I: Set clear objectives at the start of each class. Used step-by-step demonstrations to ensure everyone could follow along. Encouraged peer collaboration, letting students help each other troubleshoot. Gave individual support during exercises to address different learning paces. Showcased students’ outputs, motivating them to do their best. This approach maintained focus and created a positive, interactive atmosphere where students felt confident to ask questions and share their ideas.

The Learning Environment The learning environment at SMK RUS was modern, collaborative, and supportive. The students were highly engaged and curious, making it enjoyable to teach them. The labs and classrooms were designed to feel like real workspaces, preparing students for industry settings. What I appreciated most was the mutual respect and teamwork between teachers and students. The culture of learning was active, where students were not only recipients of knowledge but also contributors through sharing and discussion. Cultural Exchange and Experiences Aside from teaching, this internship was also about cultural exchange. I shared insights about my country’s education system, traditions, and even a bit of our language. In return, the students introduced me to Indonesian culture, taught me simple Bahasa Indonesia phrases, and shared their daily life experiences. I also joined in local cultural activities at the school, which deepened my appreciation of Indonesia’s traditions. Through simple conversations, shared meals, and laughter, I built connections that went beyond the classroom. Challenges I Faced Like any teaching journey, my internship came with challenges: • Language Barrier: At first, it was challenging to explain advanced Microsoft Office concepts clearly because some students were not confident in English. I overcame this by using visual demonstrations, simple terms, and even basic Bahasa Indonesia for better understanding. • Different Learning Paces: Some students learned quickly, while others needed more time. To manage this, I prepared extra exercises for faster learners and gave one-on-one guidance to those who needed more support. • Adjusting to a New Environment: Teaching in a new country meant adapting to different classroom dynamics and cultural expectations. However, the friendly staff and students made the transition much easier. These challenges taught me patience, flexibility, and the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet students’ needs. Reflections on My Teaching Internship Teaching advanced Microsoft Office skills at SMK RUS showed me that even basic software can be powerful when mastered at an advanced level. It was fulfilling to see students apply what they learned to their animation and programming projects, proving that productivity tools are valuable across all fields. More than the lessons, I gained new perspectives on education and culture. I learned that teaching is not just about delivering knowledge it’s about building trust, encouraging curiosity, and creating an environment where students can thrive. The cultural exchange made this experience unforgettable. I came as a teacher, but I left as a learner of culture, friendship, and lifelong lessons.

EXPLORING INDONESIA

Joining the SEA Teacher Program was not just an opportunity to teach but also an invitation to step into another world to see, feel, and experience a culture far beyond what I had known. My journey in Indonesia, particularly in Kudus and its neighboring areas, opened my eyes to the beauty of diversity and the warmth of human connection.  

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with genuine hospitality. Every smile, every kind gesture reminded me that even in a foreign land, you can find a sense of belonging. This cultural exchange was more than a trip it became a meaningful chapter of learning beyond the classroom.

Savoring Indonesia: A Journey Through Taste Before diving into history and traditions, my first introduction to Indonesian culture was through its food. I was served Soto Kudus, a signature dish made with tender buffalo meat, rich broth, and a mix of spices that carried the soul of Kudus’ culinary heritage. It was flavorful yet comforting, the kind of meal that tells a story of the community that created it. Alongside it, I enjoyed Es Dawet, a refreshing dessert drink made of coconut milk, pandan jelly, and palm sugar syrup. Its sweetness balanced the savory taste of the soup, creating a perfect combination. My culinary adventure didn’t stop there. I tried Bakso, the famous Indonesian meatball soup served in a flavorful broth, and Mie Ayam, a delightful chicken noodle dish with a savory topping. Each dish revealed a part of Indonesia’s history and culture, showing how food brings people together. Eating with the locals was more than a meal it was a bridge of friendship.

Walking Through Time: Menara Kudus & Kartini Museum Exploring Menara Kudus was like stepping back in time. This mosque is unique because it reflects a blend of Islamic and Hindu-Javanese architecture. Standing before it, I could feel the harmony of cultures and beliefs that shaped the region’s history. It taught me that Indonesia’s identity is a beautiful mosaic of influences that coexist peacefully. Another meaningful visit was the Kartini Museum, which honors the legacy of Raden Adjeng Kartini, an inspiring woman who fought for education and women’s rights. Learning about her life moved me deeply she reminded me that education is not just about knowledge but also about empowerment and change.

Relaxing by the Sea: Rembang Beach After immersing in culture and history, we took a moment to embrace nature at Rembang Beach. The sea breeze, soft waves, and serene view of the horizon created a peaceful escape from the busy days. Watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and gold was a reminder of life’s simple yet breathtaking beauty.

Learning the Language of Arts and Culture

Learning the Language of Arts and CuOne of the highlights of my cultural exchange was engaging with traditional arts. I was introduced to traditional songs, each carrying stories of the past and the values of the community. I also had the chance to see and try traditional musical instruments, realizing how music reflects the soul of a culture. We also explored traditional sports, where locals taught us games that have been passed down through generations. It was fun, interactive, and a great way to bond with everyone. The most captivating moment was learning about the Tari Kritik Dance. Watching it performed gracefully, with each movement telling a story, was mesmerizing. I even learned a few simple steps, which gave me a deeper appreciation of how dance preserves culture and history.

WELCOME EVENT AT UNIVERSITAS MURIA KUDUS

 Today, Universitas Muria Kudus welcomed us with a simple yet meaningful Welcome Event. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and friendly introductions from both staff and students, which instantly made us feel comfortable in this new environment.

Before the formal program began, we were invited to a food gathering where we had the chance to taste authentic Kudus cuisine. We were served Soto Kudus made with buffalo meat, a rich and flavorful soup that carried a distinct local taste. It was my first time trying Soto with buffalo, and it was both tender and deeply spiced, a true reflection of Kudus’ culinary heritage. To complement the meal, we enjoyed Es Dawet, a sweet and refreshing drink made with coconut milk, pandan jelly, and palm sugar perfect for the warm weather. While sharing the meal, we interacted with local students, exchanged stories about our different cultures, and even learned a few simple Indonesian phrases. It was a relaxed and friendly moment that helped us connect before the formalities of the program. Afterward, the official program began with a short yet heartfelt welcome speech from the university officials. They expressed their happiness in hosting us and highlighted how cultural exchange can strengthen friendship and understanding between people from different countries. Their sincerity made us feel truly valued as guests. The event ended with light conversations and group photos to capture the day’s warmth and hospitality. Short Reflection: This welcome event made me realize how powerful simple gestures can be. Sharing Soto Kudus with buffalo meat and Es Dawet was more than just enjoying a meal—it was tasting a part of Kudus’ history and culture. The warmth of Universitas Muria Kudus made me feel truly at home, and it made me even more excited to learn and experience more during my stay.

INDONESIA BOUND: SKY ADVENTURE

Once on the plane, I settled into my window seat and watched as the runway slowly disappeared beneath the clouds. The view from above was calming fluffy clouds stretched endlessly, kissed by the golden rays of the sun. The hum of the engines became a soothing soundtrack for my thoughts. I spent the flight reading about Semarang’s famous spots like Menara Kudus. The more I learned, the more eager I became to explore.

Hours passed quietly as I day dreamed about tasting Est Dawet and Mie Ayam, strolling through colonial-era buildings, and immersing myself in the rich culture of the city. As we neared Java, I peered out the window and saw the vast coastline, lush greenery, and the cityscape gradually appearing. It was a stunning sight the kind that instantly makes you feel grateful for the opportunity to travel. When the plane finally landed, a wave of warm, tropical air greeted me. I felt an immediate sense of welcome, as if the city itself was smiling. Semarang was no longer just a name on a map; it was real, alive, and waiting to be discovered. Short Reflection: Flying to Semarang reminded me that travel is a beautiful bridge between curiosity and discovery. The flight itself gave me time to reflect, appreciate the journey, and build excitement for what lies ahead. Semarang feels like a destination where history, culture, and modern life blend seamlessly, and I can’t wait to experience it all. This journey made me realize that stepping out of your comfort zone always leads to new lessons and unforgettable memories.
